LEONARDO DA VINCI - Studies of heel and foot joints

Royal Collection (RLW), 19010v; K/P 147v

The analyses and drawings of this sheet exemplify the mechanistic interpretation that Leonardo sought to give to foot movements. The top right sketch compares the lifting of the heel to the raising of weights placed at either end of a scale with equal arms. The two small sketches on the left margin demonstrate the varying efficiency of the muscles of the cervical vertebrae according to the laws of levers - "as proven," says Leonardo, "in the book of the elements of machines".
