The heavy marble blocks of the lantern were raised with hoists along the outside of the dome in two stages?first from ground level to one of the tribune morte, and from there to the scaffolding at the lantern base. The crane fitted with the hoist picked up the load and rotated it on an inclined plane, in order to drag it more easily toward the lantern crane. The latter picked up the load and positioned it accurately.
