The crank drives the solid vertical toothed wheel. The semicircular set of pegs on the side of the wheel meshes alternately with one of the two pinions fixed to the horizontal shaft m n. The shaft also moves a belt, causing the horizontal rod attached to the belt to move from left to right and vice versa.
