LEONARDO DA VINCI - Studies of arm joints

Royal Collection (RLW), 19003v; K/P 137v

The drawing illustrates the findings of Leonardo's anatomical analysis of shoulder and neck movements. Leonardo concentrates on the muscles that control the movements. The upper right drawing shows the muscles governing shoulder movements. It exemplifies Leonardo's favorite technique of depicting muscles by means of strings or ropes to indicate the direction of their mechanical action. This technique derives directly from Leonardo's recurrent analogy between the components of the living body and mechanical devices.
