In 1631, Agostino Coltellini founded a society which aimed to gather together "in virtuous conversation" those young students of humanities who were interested in the sciences, literature and arts. In 1635, the association, which had already changed its name from "Comunita di virtuosi e letterati" [Community of Virtous Men of Letters] to "Universita dei Letterati" [University of Men of Letters], became the "Accademia degli Apatisti". The Academy contributed significantly to the study of the Tuscan language; as such, it participated, along with the Accademia Fiorentina and the Accademia della Crusca, in the Grand Duke's policy of promoting the Florentine dialect as the official language for the dissemination of knowledge. When Coltellini died in 1693, the Academy came under the protection of Cosimo III de' Medici who transfered the premises of the Academy to a room in the "Studio" [University]. In 1783, the Grand Duke Peter Leopold united the Accademia degli Apatisti with the Florentine Academy and the Crusca Academy to form the Accademia Fiorentina Seconda. Ferdinand II de' Medici, N. Steensen, F. Redi, L. Magalotti and V. Viviani were all members of the Academy.
