Marble Storehouse

The marble storehouse was build in the early nineteenth century in the region of Versilia, on the site of a fortress that the Grand Duke Peter Leopold had constructed in 1788. The area was known as the Forte dei Marmi. The storehouse held marbles from the quarries of Mt. Altissimo, which were then loaded onto cargoes and transported to the porto di Leghorn. From Leghorn, the same cargo ships carried iron from the mines of Elba to the ironworks of Pietrasantino.
