Parallactic instrument

This instrument, described in Ptolemy's Almagest, was also called the "triquetrum" (i.e. "triangle") in the Middle Ages. Looking through the sights of the instrument, one can measure the angular distance of a celestial body from the zenith. The angle is not given directly, but by means of the corresponding chord of the circle.
