Leonardo produced extensive repertoires of forms of similar subject, as well as interminable lists of words. He also composed repertoires of shapes and words interlaced with one another, as shown by the fascinating pictograms of his rebuses. These exercises are emblematic of Leonardo's incessant striving to master all of the possible modes of communication of thought, so as to extend its capacity for expression to hitherto unprecedented limits.
