John Harrison (1693-1776)
Marine cronograph, 1735
Replica (Leonard Salzer)
Greenwich, National Maritime Museum, inv. ZAA0276

A faithful working replica of Harrison's first marine chronograph (H1). It contained a remarkable number of innovative ideas, which Harrison went on to perfect over time until he managed to make an instrument that measured time perfectly. This was how he solved the dramatic problem of the quest for longitude and won the substantial monetary prize offered by the British Government in 1772.
