Zoom

Luigi Mussini (1813-1888)
The triumph of Truth, 1847
Milan, Accademia di Belle Arti, inv. 1980, n. 358

An eloquent example of the triumph of Galileo in the age of Positivism. Truth is a young girl holding a torch, surrounded by the great men of history who have contributed to the search for religious, moral, philosophical, scientific and artistic truth. On her left, around the central figure of Galileo, we see the group of astronomers comprising Ptolemy on his knees and Copernicus holding a book. Below them we see Kepler with Isaac Newton just behind him.
