Facsimile (Giunti, Florence 1990); ca. 1490-91; 31.5x22 cm
This manuscript, composed of 32 leaves, originally also included another treatise - unfortunately lost - "On shadow and light", i.e. on the variations in the appearances of objects according to whether they are illuminated or in the penumbra. Leonardo studied the optical foundations of these phenomena, in order to be able to reproduce them with precision as a painter.
fols. 10v-11r: Studies on the projection of light through a small aperture (left) and on the formation of derived shadows (right).
