Model after Leonardo da Vinci, Ms. 2184 (IFP), fol. 5v

The model illustrates the complex modular geometry so characteristic of Leonardo's architectural projects. Modularity features most prominently in his many studies on the geometric generation of elegant solid forms, his search for special lighting effects, and his concept of a structure - be it a machine, the Earth, the human body, or a building - as a perfectly articulated organism.

This approach is vividly demonstrated by the three-dimensional transposition of the drawing into the model. The church is almost certainly the result of a theoretical analysis unrelated to an actual construction project.
