The dome structure

The dome's springing point stands 54,6 meters above ground level, while its height from the drum base to the top is about 33 meters. The distance between two opposite edges of the exterior octagonal base is about 55 meters. The height of the lantern atop the dome, including the gilded copper sphere, is slightly more than 22 meters. The dome's weight may be estimated at 37,000 metric tons, and the number of bricks used in the structure might have been more than four million.

The dome of Florence Cathedral is the largest ever built without the use of a wooden centering.
