The screw

Many pages of Leonardo's manuscripts, notably Madrid Ms. I, contain detailed analyses of the screw. Leonardo was fascinated with the device, and made extensive use of it. He sought to classify the different type of screw, to determine their performances accurately by geometrical methods, and to illustrate their potential applications in machines and mechanical operations. He also designed several screw-threading machines.
