Traditionally assigned to 1420-34 (hence the reference to the Hussite Wars), the Codex?which survives in a Munich library?is now believed to date from the late fifteenth century. The manuscript comprises two distinct parts, compiled by two different authors. Many of its pictures are captioned in German. The main subjects are military devices, weight-raising systems, underwater breathing apparatus, grinding machines, and building equipment.
