The rocker-pump is fitted with two valves that open and shut in turn, raising the water into a reservoir from which it falls onto the waterwheel that drives the mill grindstone. The waterwheel is principally powered by the stream flowing under it. The pump system improves the waterwheel's performance by providing a secondary supply of energy.
