PAOLO SANTINI - (after TACCOLA) - De machinis

Place: Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

.....................

Ms. Lat. 7239 (BNP)

Facsimile; second half of the 15th century; 35x24.5 cm

This 166-leaf vellum codex is the finest and most complete of the many surviving copies of Taccola's De machinis. The vignettes are well executed and coloured in fine detail. At one point the codex was in the possession of Mahomet II, the powerful Sultan, who received it as a sumptuous gift, probably from the famous humanist Ciriaco d'Ancona, who was an acquaintance of Taccola.

fols. 13v-14r: Soldiers and cavalry in battle.
