LEONARDO DA VINCI - Ms. E

Place: Institut de France, Paris

.....................

Facsimile (Giunti, Florence 1989); ca. 1513-14; 14.5x10 cm

The manuscript was composed of 96 leaves but now it contains only 80, owing to Guglielmo Libri's theft of the final group of sheets, which have never been recovered. The gathering documents Leonardo's activities after he moved from Milan to Rome in 1513. The two central themes are mechanics and the flight of birds. There are also drawings and notes concerning water.

fols. 42v-43r: Effect of strong wind on birds (left); maneuvers of birds in wind (right).
