This powerful machine was operated by hand. The column was raised by means of other devices beforehand, then placed on the horizontal slide. A system composed of a toothed wheel and pinion transmitted the motion via a worm screw to the horizontal toothed wheels and the parallel toothed wheels below. The latter meshed with a rack that pulled the wheeled platform on which the column base rested.
