Working model after Francesco di Giorgio, Ms. 197.b.21 (BML), fol. 27v
This powerful machine was operated by hand. The column was raised by means of other devices beforehand, then placed on the horizontal slide. A system composed of a toothed wheel and pinion transmitted the motion via a worm screw to the horizontal toothed wheels and the parallel toothed wheels below. The latter meshed with a rack that pulled the wheeled platform on which the column base rested.
