Working model after Francesco di Giorgio, Ms. Saluzziano 148 (BRT), fol. 34v

The mill is powered by a horizontal waterwheel with spoon-shaped vanes. The water-supply chute narrows toward the spout to impart higher flow velocity. A transmission consisting of three pairs of toothed wheels enables the waterwheel rotation velocity to be adjusted to that of the grindstone. An intermediate wheel - a frequent feature in Francesco di Giorgio's designs - carries two sets of teeth, one axial, the other radial.
