LEONARDO DA VINCI - Using the toothed wheel to transmit motion - Continuous rotary motion producing reciprocal linear motion - Semi-toothed wheels, rack, and pin bars

Madrid Ms. I (BNM), fol. 2r

In the system shown in the top drawing, each complete revolution of the toothed and pin-gear wheel causes the horizontal rack to move back and forth. The rack is driven by the toothed segment connected to the shaft by two pinions that mesh alternately with a discontinuous series of pins. In the bottom drawing, the driving wheel alternately moves the two pin bars, which, being connected by a rope, impart reciprocal motion to each other.
