"This instrument may be used to allow a man to fall from great heights." The hapless flier was supposed to hang on to the grips a and b. On impact, the upper wooden shafts would plunge like wedges into the lower ones. This would dampen the shock, which would further be cushioned by the wool bale at the foot of the device.
