Water-raising systems

Devices for raising and conveying water feature prominently in the manuscripts of the Sienese engineers. Francesco di Giorgio devoted much energy to innovations in pumping technology. He compiled an exhaustive classification of pumps, giving detailed notes of their specifications and performance. Water-raising contrivances were also essential for creating the artificial 'waterfalls' or millraces to drive the waterwheels used on operating machinery.
