Bulding machines

Machinery and devices for raising and moving construction materials are a recurrent topic in the manuscripts of the Sienese engineers. Taccola depicts many worksite machines, typically of conventional design. He was clearly fond of small-sized equipment fitted on wheeled platforms. Francesco di Giorgio focused instead on gigantic machines with highly complex gears - toothed wheels, pinions, and, especially, worm-screw-and-rack systems - designed to raise and move columns, obelisks, and even towers.
