Very little is known about Bonaccorso, who served as engineer and sculptor in the famous workshop started by his grandfather, Lorenzo Ghiberti. He built bells and firearms, and constructed fortifications for Virginio Orsini.
Bonaccorso's wide-ranging technical expertise is attested in a finely illustrated manuscript known as the Zibaldone (scrap-book), preserved in Florence. In it, Bonaccorso regularly inserted drawings of the machines on Brunelleschi's construction site of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Cathedral of Florence. The Zibaldone is evidence of Bonaccorso's dominant interest in metalworking and his growing attention to architecture and construction science.
