Between 1610-1630, Galileo gifted some telescopes to noblemen and wealthy people. Of such telescopes only two survived. The present piece is a facsimile of the most refined one. The original instrument has a magnifying power of about 20x, but a very small visual field. It was probably with a telescope resembling this one that Galileo accomplished his astronomical discoveries.
