Giovanni Alfonso Borelli
Theoricae Mediceorum planetarum ex causis physicis deductae, Florentiae, ex Typographia S.M.D., 1666
[IMSS: Med 773]
In his Theories of the Medicean Planets, Giovanni Alfonso Borelli (1608-1679) tried to explain the oval shape of the orbits of the Medicean stars on the basis of Galileo's mechanics. Such form was produced by a periodic equilibrium between a central force acting on each Medicean star and the velocity of the latter in every point of its orbit.
