Round forms
Leonardo da Vinci, Madrid I, 44v

  [IV.4A  Round forms]

In the Renaissance the circle, like the square and the regular polygons, was considered to be a perfect form. The perfection of these forms depended on the fact that they are those in which the symmetrical correspondence among the parts is greatest. Leonardo frequently notes the presence of round forms in the anatomical organs of man, and designs machines of a circular appearance. Many of his architectural drawings, moreover, are based on the multiplication and combination of round geometric forms.
