Placental stage
  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Final phase of delivery, in which the placenta is expelled. Usually occurs ten minutes after fetus delivery and is triggered by the resumption of uterine contractions, which detach the placenta from the uterine wall. If the placenta is not expelled spontaneously within an hour of birth, it is extracted manually by introducing the hand in the uterine cavity.
