The Duke of Lorraine, called "the Great." He fought in the civil wars in France and joined the Catholic League in 1588. In 1559, he married Claudia, daughter of King Henry II Valois of France (1519-1559). His daughter Christina (1565-1636) married Ferdinand I de' Medici (1549-1609), Grand Duke of Tuscany.
