This type of multiple barometer was invented by Guillaume Amontons c. 1688 and made by Jean Primavesy. It is mounted on a wooden base with painted floral motifs. The tube is folded into four parallel arms. The first arm (from the right) is filled with mercury; the second contains a light liquid (water or alcohol), used only to transmit the movement of the mercury; the third also contains mercury; the fourth contains a colored indicator liquid. This arrangement was developed in the second half of the seventeenth century to allow the construction of compact barometers. However, the evaporation in the open arm of the tube compromised the instrument's precision. Next to the barometer is fixed a colored-alcohol thermometer with a Réaumur scale.
