The white varnished metal dial has Roman hour numerals and minute lines. At the center is a small brass disk for the alarm. The movement has a going train composed of three wheels (excluding the contrate wheel) with a weight, counterweight and rope for winding. The mechanism is controlled by a short pendulum and verge escapement. The thin pendulum rod is integral with the verge. The alarm is operated by means of a weight and counterweight, with a contrate wheel and hammer striking the bell at the top from inside. This hanging clock is a late replica of early alarm-clock design: the alarm release system is one of the oldest, dating back to the Middle Ages. The small brass disk at the center of the dial may be older than the clock itself. The Roman numerals are presented in the medieval tradition, with the letters arranged radially. As in many fourteenth- and fifteenth-century dials, the numbers run counterclockwise.
