This terracotta model, commissioned by Giuseppe Galletti, reproduces table VI of William Hunter's Anatomia uteri humani gravidi (1774). It shows the situation at the term of pregnancy and the end of the dilation stage. However, the fetal membranes are still intact. The fetus, which seems larger than normal (macrosomic), is in cephalic presentation, its head lodged in the pelvic cavity and surrounded by the stretched walls of the cervix. The umbilical cord is sectioned, as the placenta was attached to the anterior part of the uterus, extracted in the course of the section.
