This terracotta model, commissioned by Giuseppe Galletti, shows a anencephalic fetus in incomplete "buttocks-first" breech presentation. The placenta is in a posterior fundal position. The fetus is at term, but has not developed a skull and lacks a brain and cerebellum. During its intrauterine life, the fetus is vulnerable to developmental anomalies and disorders affecting the entire organism or its appendages. The events are caused by a wide variety of factors, still largely unknown. They can disrupt the normal course of pregnancy and delivery.
