Description:
2007 is the year of the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of Carl von Linné. Linnaeus' revolutionary contributions to the botanical nomenclature and its classification brought about important changes in the traditional theory and practice of botany. The intention of the conference "Linnaeus in Italy: The Spread of a Botanical Revolution" is to reconstruct the historical context of the intense cultural and scientific exchange between Italy and Sweden by presenting many hitherto little-known aspects that will help to cast light onto the richness of the contemporary botanical institutions in Italy and to discover their role and their impact on the diffusion of Linnaeus' sexual classification system. The conference is organized by the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence and by the University of Pisa with the patronage of the Swedish Royal Academy of Science, The Linnean Society of London and The Swedish Embassy in Rome; coordinators are Marco Beretta and Alessandro Tosi. The papers will be published in 2007 in order to coincide with the official celebrations.
