The IMSS has collaborated in the publication of "Viaggi e Scienza. Le istruzioni scientifiche per i viaggiatori nei secoli XVII-XIX" (Travels and Science - Instructional Guides for Travellers between the 17th and 19th Centuries), edited by Maurizio Bossi and Claudio Greppi and published by Olschki. The book - presented on February 9th in Rome at the Societą Geografica Italiana - features instructional guides for travellers as an essential part of the systematic exploration of the world from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The advice they contain tends to discipline as well as to stimulate observation of the various physical and cultural aspects within and outside of the European continent. The texts are not only an integral part of travel literature - they constitute a significant expression of the western system of knowledge as a whole.
