Area:
Museum
Start:
29 July 2006
End:
4 October 2006
Description:
On July 29th, under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, the exhibition "Mirabilia Maris: Cartographic Visions and Travel Reports" was inaugurated in Viareggio on the premises of the newly-restored Musei Civici of Villa Paolina. Organized by the City of Viareggio and the University of Pisa (Department of Political Sciences), the exhibition will run until October 4th, and aims to outline the perception and representation modalities of the Versilian coastal area from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The exhibition rooms present drawings, projects, maps, travel reports and instruments for surveying and navigation (some of them lent by the IMSS), in order to trace the history of the Versilia from its past as a contended border territory, to reclaimed land, up to the birth and development of the town of Viareggio. The catalogue, edited by Susanna Caccia and Anna Vittoria Bertuccelli Migliorini ("Mirabilia Maris: Visioni cartografiche e resoconti di viaggio. Le marine lucchesi tra XVI e XVIII secolo", 35.00 Euros), is published by ETS Pisa.
