Description: |
On the occasion of the imminent anniversary in 2009 - marking 400 years since the first celestial discoveries by Galileo Galilei - an event destined to profoundly change the course of the history of astronomy - the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has decided to appoint a National Committee, by a decree dated April 27, 2006 and under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic. The Committee met for the first time on July 25, in order to elect its organs. In the next three years, it will promote - under the presidency of Edoardo Vesentini - a series of cultural initiatives at different levels: municipal (town councils of Florence, Padua and Pisa), regional (in Tuscany and the Veneto), national and international. These various initiatives, that will be carried out by the Universities of Florence, Pisa and Padua, the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) and the IMSS, are expected - according to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Education, University and Scientific Research - to increase, thanks to the historical example set by Galileo, the interest of young people in astronomical and scientific research. |
