Description: |
The original archives of the Regio Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale (ARMU) contain the documents pertaining to the Museum founded in Florence by the initiative of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo and opened to the public in 1775. The documentation, that covers a span of almost a century (1780-1872), is the principal source for reconstructing the history of that institution, initially directed by the scientist Felice Fontana. The principal sections (ca. 5,500 records now available on line) have been catalogued with different analytical criteria according to the archival unit examined (file, register, folder or document). The records include not only persons, institutions, instruments, places and buildings: a hierarchic semantic-based index of the documents has been adopted, aiming at offering scholars the possibility of a thematic search. The ARMU archive is curated by Patrizia Ruffo.
