Description: |
Starting in March 2007 the archive of the Congressi degli Scienziati Italiani (IRIS) is available online. The archive contains 36 collections of documents concerning the annual meetings of Italian scientists during the 19th century. The documents reveal the complex interactions of national, local, and cultural history during the Italian Risorgimento and the important role of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the organization of such meetings. Beginning in 1839, the meetings were held every year until 1847. They resumed after the Unification of Italy, in 1862. In particular, one meeting in Palermo in 1863 oversaw the founding of the "Societą italiana per il progresso delle scienze" (Italian Society for the Progress of Science). The IRIS Archive, edited by Aldo Cecconi, contains descriptions of all the documents and indices of the names of people and academic institutions.
