The exhibition "Viaggio: Mito e Scienza" (Voyage: Myth and Science) opened in Bologna at the Museo di Palazzo Poggi. Under the high patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, it was organized for the occasion of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the death of Ulisse Aldrovandi, a Bolognese naturalist. The exhibition focuses on the themes of 16th and 17th century explorations and 18th century naturalistic travels, and it highlights the contextual expanding of world borders and frontiers of knowledge. The instruments, paintings, geographical maps and printed documents on display present the interrelation of voyage, art and science that emerge from Aldrovandi's work. The exhibition shows not only the monumental "Storia Naturale" by Aldrovandi, but also the preparatory materials made, among others, by Agostino Carracci, Bartolomeo Passerotti and Jacopo Ligozzi. The exhibition catalogue ("Viaggio: Mito e Scienza", 40,00 Euros), edited by Walter Tega, is published by Bononia University Press. |
