Among the initiatives organized for the occasion of the 17th Week of Scientific Culture (March 19-25) was the temporary exhibition "La Linea del Sole" (The Line of the Sun), inaugurated at the IMSS on March 21, the date of the Spring equinox. Thanks to the support of the Camera di Commercio in Florence, the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze and the Provincia di Firenze, the exhibition traces the history of sundials, from ones in the Baptistery and Santa Maria del Fiore to the gnomonic creations of Egnazio Danti for the church of Santa Maria Novella to the 13th century instruments of the Florentine observatories. Astronomical studies, time measurement and calendar reform are the themes that inspired not only sundials but also pictorial decorations in Florence, such as the heavenly hemispheres of the Old Sacresty in the church of San Lorenzo and the Cappella dei Pazzi, and mechanical inventions, such as the clocks by Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo della Volpaia. The exhibition includes scenographies, interactive models, instruments, books, drawings and multimedia access to explore the ancient sundials in and around Florence. The exhibition will be open until September 23rd, the date of the Fall equinox. The catalogue ("La Linea del Sole: Le grandi meridiane fiorentine", 15,00 Euros), edited by Filippo Camerota, is published by Edizioni della Meridiana, Florence. |
