Area:
Institute
Start:
10 May 2007
Description:
2007 is the year of the tercenternary celebrations of the birth of Carl Linné. Linnaeus' revolutionary contributions to botanical nomenclature and its classification brought about important changes to the traditional theory and practice of botany. The IMSS is celebrating this event with an important publication. The book "Linnaeus in Italy: the Spread of a Revolution in Science", published by Science History Publications/USA and edited by Marco Beretta and Alessandro Tosi, reconstructs the historical context of the intense cultural and scientific exchange between Italy and Sweden. The authors present many hitherto little-known aspects of the exchange that help shed light on the richness of contemporary botanical institutions in Italy and their role in and impact on the diffusion of Linnaen sexual system. Moreover, the book aims to show the multi-faceted social dynamics of scientific exchange between the two peripheral countries.
