On December 14th and 15th, 2007, an international conference on "The Accademia del Cimento in the European Context (1657-2007)" will be held at the Uffizi Library in Florence. The conference is promoted by the Fondazione Scienza e Tecnica, the IMSS, the Johns Hopkins University and the Universitą di Cassino on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the Cimento's foundation.
Eminent Italian and foreign scholars will expound upon the experimental activity and scientific instruments of the Accademia, not only in regard to studies in the physical sciences (upon which historians have hitherto concentrated their attention) but also in terms of chemistry and life sciences.
Some papers will examine the relations between the Cimento and other Italian scientific societies, highlighting that the Accademia was not an isolated development in Italian scientific life.
The conference will also be an occasion to study the Accademia's exchanges with scientists and other scientific societies across Europe (particularly in France and England) and will aid in providing a clear definition the role of the Accademia del Cimento in 17th-century European science. |
