Description: |
On December 17th, 2007, the new Monumental Meridiana-Sundial was inaugurated in Piazza dei Giudici at the entrance of the Institute and Museum of the History of Science. Designed by Filippo Camerota and Luise Schnabel, this spectacular sundial - both a work of art and scientific instrument - was conceived as an "identifying marler" for the Institute and Museum of the History of Science. The Sundial consists of a 6 metres high bronze gnomon, formed by two large bronze stelae that symbolize the day and the night and by travertine traversal lines which signal the Sun's diurnal course for various periods of the year. The Sundial was inaugurated at the conclusion of the exhibition "The Line of the Sun. Great Sundials in Florence", which took place at the IMSS from March 22 to December 22, 2007.
