Description: |
In 1609, Galileo Galilei gave the universe a new physiognomy. The telescope allowed him to confirm the revolutionary theories of Nicolaus Copernicus: the Earth was not stationary at the centre of the universe, but it rotates around itself and revolves around the Sun. It was the first step towards a new astronomy and vision of the world. Now, 400 years later, the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza is producing an exhibition devoted to Galileo's telescope and the observations he made with it. "Galileo's Telescope" opens the series of events celebrating Galileo's celestial discoveries in 2009. The exhibition, which will take place from March 4 to December 31, 2008, is promoted by IMSS, Ministero dell'Universitą e della Ricerca, Regione Toscana, Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, under the patronship of Provincia di Firenze and Comitato Nazionale per le celebrazioni del IV centenario delle scoperte celesti di Galileo, with the collaboration of Officine Panerai and Opera Laboratori Fiorentini. A fundamental contribution to the exhibition scientific project has been given by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) - Section of Florence, the Istituto Nazionale di Ottica Applicata (INOA), the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri and the Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro di Murano.
