Description: |
While the general catalogue of the collections edited by Mara Miniati was being released, in 1991 the IMSS decided to study and valorise its material patrimony of scientific instruments by publishing a series of specialist catalogues dedicated to specific object typologies. Following the contributions of Gerard L.'E Turner (Microscopes, 1991), Paolo Brenni (Mechanical Instruments, 1993), Willem D. Hackmann (Pneumatical, Magnetical and Electrical Instruments, 1995), Albert Van Helden (Early Telescopes, 1999) and Elly Dekker (Orbs, Spheres and Globes, 2004), the sixth catalogue has come off the press. This is the "Catalogue of Sun-dials, Nocturnals and Related Instruments" written by Anthony J. Turner, an antiquarian as well as renowned scholar in the sector of antique scientific instruments. The catalogue is published by Giunti Editore and describes 124 objects including sundials, nocturnals and other non-mechanical time measuring devices: hourglasses, oil lamps, calendars, etc. The catalogue includes the instruments on display in the Museum, as well as those in storage. All of the objects are well classified, described and photographically reproduced. The catalogue also provides information on the builder and origin of every single instrument, along with a complete and updated bibliography. |
