The organisation of the exhibition "The Medici and Science" (Florence, Museo degli Argenti, May 15, 2008 - January 11, 2009) formed the occasion to restore a few important scientific items conserved at the Institute and Museum of the History of Science. Thanks to the joint action of the Ente Cassa di Risparmio in Florence, the Italian Ministry for the Cultural Heritage and Activities, and Opera Laboratori Fiorentini, the following objects returned to their original splendour: the terrestrial and celestial globes made by Matthaus Greuther in Rome in 1632 and 1636 respectively; the polyhedral sundial with 18 faces made by Stefano Buonsignori in Florence during the 16th century; the planisphere made by Lopo Homen in Lisbon in 1554. Studio 4, Florence, conducted the delicate restoration of the covers of the two globes and the polyhedral sundial. The restoration dealt with the reintegration of several pictorial parts on wood, detached or lost during the last years. Sergio Boni was responsible for the restoration of the planisphere. In particular he separated, cleaned and mounted on suitable frames the eight parchments that form the planisphere. Since the foundation of the Museum, this important work in cartography was poorly glued in a frame that was absolutely insufficient from the conservative point of view. |
