Description: |
Thanks to the special contribution of the Ente Cassa di Risparmio in Florence, the restoration of the great armillary sphere made in Florence by Antonio Santucci di Pomarance between 1588 and 1593, placed at the centre of the cosmography room of the Institute and Museum of the History of Science, has begun. This delicate work follows a five-year campaign of careful structural analysis conducted by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, by the Institute for the Valorisation of Lumber and Arboreal Species (IVALSA - CNR) in Sesto Fiorentino, and by the Polytechnic School in Turin. The dismounting and the transportation of the great armillary sphere required Roberto Buda, his company Relart and the art-transport company Arteria to work constantly for about two weeks. During the next months, the sphere will be restored under the scientific responsibility of Giorgio Strano, curator of the collections of the IMSS, and the technical supervision of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure. The end of the restoration is set for the late Summer 2009, when the instrument will be re-mounted in the new cosmography room of the renovated Galileo Museum. |
