In April 2008, Florence launched the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Antonio Meucci (Florence, April 13, 1808 - New York, October 18, 1889), who is universally acknowledged as the inventor of the telephone and one of the preminent representatives of Florentine creativity and science. Coordinated by the Facoltą di Ingegneria of the University of Florence, the celebrations received the patronage of, among the others, the Institute and Museum of the History of Science and will close on April 2009. The initiative aims at remembering Antonio Meucci's life and works, presenting a moment of reflection on the present and future of telecommunications. Some events will be devoted to high schools and universities students from all over Tuscany and some will also be organized in the United States of America.
